BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a measurement used to assess whether a person has a healthy body weight for their height.
It is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters.

The formula is:
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)2

The result is categorized into different ranges:

  • Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
  • Normal weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
  • Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9
  • Obesity: BMI 30 or higher

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it doesn't directly measure body fat or account for factors like muscle mass or distribution of fat.
